Cafeteria Waste Station Build

After months of data collection and waste audits, students designed and built a new waste station for the Cougar Cafe. We now can compost, recycle and reduce landfill trash generated at lunch. Our data shows that this waste station has eliminated approximately  20 pounds of trash from going to the landfill each day! Not only are students recyling more, but the amount of food being composted has doubled!

E-Cycles Awareness & Drive

Students wanted to explore what happens to our electronics when we throw them away. What we learned shocked us all. This class decided to educate our community about the resource and energy waste associated with the electronics market, and the hazards we face when these materials are thrown in landfills. Students also organized, promoted and ran an E-Cyles drive that was held at CBMS in April. Senator Bernie Sanders presented them with the Green Comunity Award at the annual LEAP Energy Fair. Their  E-Cycles drive collected over 8,000 lbs of electronic waste to be properly recycled within 3 hours that day!

CBMS Solar Walk & Signs

We are lucky enough to currently have the largest solar arry of any school in VT...and we are really proud of that! This group of students decided to bring to life the story of how solar came to be at CBMS. They developed a series of focus questions that would tell this story, then they set out to find the answers. Each student designed and wrote their own sign panel, including a QR scan code with video of them explaining their sign. Wood and Wood Signs in Waitsfield printed our work onto professional weatherproof sign board. We then built sign posts and mounted the finished products around school grounds. We now have a 9 station Solar Walk. Come and check it out!

Recycled Art Mural

This class was really passionate about educating others about pollution related to plastics in our environment. Students began by researching our dependency on plastics and what can happen if they are not recycled properly. We found out that small plastic bottle caps cannot be recycled easily in our waste district...so they go to the landfill. Students created a bottle cap drive within our school to collect as many as possible. This became a fun competiton between Advisory Groups, and in the end the group that collected the most won an ice cream float party. Once the caps were collected, washed and dried, a design plan was put in place. It took three weeks to complete this 8 x 3 foot mural that now hangs in the main lobby of our school. Students hope this mural will be a daily reminder of why it's important to reduce our "footprint" as much as possible....plus it's just cool!
